Nick Gonzalez is a British-born artist living and working in Hamburg since 2002. He studied painting, illustration, graphic design and film-making in London and Brighton, England, first at Hornsey College of Art and Design, then at Brighton University and did post-graduate work at the Royal College of Art.

After graduating, he worked at the University of Sussex as designer and media producer, after which he formed his own creative design company based in Brighton. Over many years he has developed his interest in painting, exhibiting regularly in group shows at the Brighton International Arts Festival, with solo exhibitions in England, Spain and Germany, and his work is now held in private collections in England, Spain, Cyprus, USA and Germany.

Personal Statement

"I am inspired by the natural worlds of landscape & seascape. The use of natural motifs such as the wind-swept sea or the life cycle of trees offers up a perpetual rich source of artistic possibilities. My work is rooted in the British and French Schools of landscape painting, dynamic traditions which have been constantly refreshed and renewed over the years by many of the most gifted painters in European art. For me, the forms that landscapes come in vary from high-realism to minimal abstraction, from poetic mood to formal construction, from high drama to fleeting moments of play. Each painting has it's own developmental journey - the act of painting is a passionate process of making permanent those initial impressions and visions. My starting point is usually an emotional response towards the chosen subject, and my choice of 'style' or treatment varies accordingly. For me, the painting is not so much about a particular subject as it is about how that subject illuminates itself. Therefore, in terms of my technique, I sometimes paint very rapidly and at other times there is a slow process of excavation. In any case, I’m always sustained by a sense of curiosity and wonder at the outcome, aiming to discover the magical potential within each new artwork."

Meine Inspiration ist die natürliche Welt von Landschaft und Meer. Die Wahl von Motiven aus der Natur wie windgepeitschte See oder der Lebenszyklus von Bäumen ist eine fast endlose Quelle künstlerischer Möglichkeiten. Die Wurzeln meiner Arbeit finden sich in der Englischen und Französichen Schule der Landschaftsmalerei, einer dynamischen Tradition, die über Generationen von namhaften europäischen Künstlern gepflegt und erneuert wurde. Landschaft, wie ich sie sehe, kommt in unterschiedlicher Form, hochrealistisch bis zu minimaler Abstraktion, in poetischer Stimmung bis zu formaler Konstruktion, mit großer Dramatik oder flüchtigem, spielerischen Moment. Jedes Gemälde hat seine eigene Entwicklung - der Akt es Malens ist ein leidenschaftlicher Prozess, der erste Eindrücke oder Visionen dauerhaft macht. Der Anfang ist immer eine emotionale Reaktion auf das gewählte Motiv, meine Wahl von Stil und Technik ändert sich entsprechend. In der Malerei ist für mich nicht so sehr das Motiv wichtig, sondern wie es sich selbst illuminiert. Deshalb ist das Entstehen eines Bildes sehr unterschiedlich, mal schnell gemalt, mal ist es ein langsamer Prozess des Erforschens. In jedem Fall trägt mich das Gefühl von Neugier auf die Wirkung des Ergebnisses, das Entdecken des magischen Potentials eines jeden neuen Kunstwerks.
